What are Pre-School Speech and Language Screenings?

Speak & Develop offers pre-school speech and language screenings to all Daycares, Pre-schools and Early Childhood Centers in the North Shore area.

The preschool screening provides an outline as to whether your child’s speech sounds and language skills are developing age-appropriately and if they would benefit from speech therapy. The screeners look at:

• The range of speech sounds your child is using.

• What kind of words and grammar your child is using.

• Understanding of spoken language.

• Understanding of basic language concepts.

• Fluency (stuttering)

Screenings are offered to children aged 3-6 years old and takes approximately 20 minutes to complete per child. Following the screening, parents will be provided a short summary report indicating if their child’s communication skills are at the expected level or whether further assessment is recommended.

By gathering this information early on, appropriate support and intervention can be provided to support your child’s communication skills. It also provides opportunity for us to liaise with educators to see if they have noticed any additional speech or language difficulties.
